A rare total lunar eclipse which was viewed across Asia, Australia and the U.S. happened on December 10 (December 11 in the Philippines), making the moon appear and bright red.

During the eclipse the moon will darken and show an unpredictable range of different colours as the Earth blocks the sun's rays. This effect is known as the Rayleigh scattering.

"Not only will the moon be beautifully red, it will also be inflated by the moon illusion." NASA scientists said.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, throwing the moon into shadow.

Another total lunar eclipse is expected to happen on April 15, 2014.
