Iya Villania Named UN Spokesperson

Iya Villania Named UN Spokesperson

Actress-host Iya Villania together with youth leader Bam Aquino, Albay Governor Joey Salceda, and women’s NGO director Iza Abeja named the newest additions to the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Advocates as announced by United Nations during the solidarity concert held at the University of the Philippines on February 10, 2012.

The Filipino-Australian celebrity, Iya Villania, has been named a UN Spokesperson for Youth Employment and Migration. Iya detailed: “definitely, my own family has been affected by [unemployment and migration]. My parents were forced to find better opportunities away from their homeland.”

With over a million Twitter followers, the actress and TV host said that it would be her social medium of choice for voicing out and sharing her advocacy.

I am hoping to create awareness… [because] we are not dealing about it. I would definitely use social media, Twitter, to promote my cause.

Villania, Aquino, Salceda and Abeja joined beauty titlist Venus Raj as UN’s spokespersons.

In September 2000, member states of the United Nations adopted the UN Millennium Declaration which aimed to “reducing poverty and the worst forms of human deprivation.”

The Millennium Development Goals, over the period 1990 to 2015, are 1) eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; 2) achieve universal primary education; 3) promote gender equality and empower women; 4) reduce child mortality; 5) improve maternal health; 6) combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; 7) ensure environmental sustainability and 8) develop a global partnership for development.
