“True Blood's” Alexander Skarsgard Terrorizes in “Straw Dogs”

Alexander Skarsgard isn't the first acting hunk to be compared to Brad Pitt.

But the Swede might be one of the few who's up to the task. Known as “True Blood's” icy-hot Viking vampire, Eric, he is preparing to take a bite out of the box office with Columbia Pictures' new suspense thriller “Straw Dogs.”

The film transplants the chilling 1971 Dustin Hoffman-led movie into the sweaty, close-knit Deep South. Skarsgard, 35, plays local football hero Charlie, whose lust for actress ex-girlfriend Amy (Kate Bosworth) turns violent once she returns home with writer husband David (James Marsden).

"It's about territory," says Skarsgard, whose powerful physique, known well to HBO's “True Blood” fans, is showcased in the film. "(Amy) shows up with a writer from Hollywood who's completely different, completely cerebral and not a real man in Charlie's eyes." Charlie puts David to the test, convinced Amy is his.

"From an acting point of view, he reminds me of Paul Newman in `Hud.' And from a charisma point of view, he reminds me of Brad Pitt in `Thelma and Louise,'” says director Rod Lurie. Like the 1971 “Straw Dogs” original, Charlie assists in a violent siege on David and Amy's home, but because of Skarsgard, "you understand finally what she saw in the guy in the first place," says Lurie.

Skarsgard has come a long way. As a child actor in Sweden (his parents are actor Stellan Skarsgard and his first wife, My, a doctor), he quit the business at 13, uneasy with fame. Instead, Skarsgard finished school, spent time in the Swedish Navy, attended college in England and moved to New York at 21 to begin theater training. After returning to Sweden to launch his acting career as an adult, he visited Los Angeles, where his father's manager suggested that he audition for a film for "fun." That movie was 2001's “Zoolander.”

The small part led to others, including his breakthrough role in HBO mini-series “Generation Kill.” The rest is shirtless, fang-induced history.

When Lurie, who had never seen “True Blood,” first met Skarsgard in Hollywood, he looked "very European," the director recalls. "Tight clothes, all white. He had long blond hair, that sort of sweet smile. Almost the opposite of the character he was going to play."

Lurie told him he'd have to beef up to play Charlie. Skarsgard promised he'd eat a lot of red meat. "I didn't realize the Adonis-like nature of what I was going to see," Lurie says. On location in Louisiana., "women were driving down from as far away as St. Louis just to sit in the lobby and watch him walk out. "

But under the veneer of the film's good looks is an emotional rape scene, which Skarsgard says is a stark difference between the modern film and its predecessor. To his character, Charlie, the violent act is not a rape but rather " a love scene," Skarsgard says.

In December, Skarsgard returns to the “True Blood” set to begin Season 5. With fans, Skarsgard has only one rule: "No, I don't bite," he says with a laugh. "If I do that once and there's a picture of me biting a fan, then I'm going to end up doing that for 30 years."

Opening soon across the Philippines, “Straw Dogs” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Marvin Sonsona Wins Against Mexican Carlos Jacobo

Marvin Sonsona Wins Against Mexican Carlos Jacobo

Marvin Sonsona is now back in fighting form after winning against Mexican rival Carlos Jacobo, 98-91, 98-91 and 97-92 in favor of the General Santos City native boxer, in their boxing fight at Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on Saturday, October 15.

In the early rounds, Sonsona controlled the contest with well-placed jabs and left crosses and counters as the visiting Mexican appeared confused and could not get his bearing. In the middle rounds however, Sonsona's long absence took its toll as he appeared spent up and gasping for breath allowing Jacobo to take the offensive. As Jacobo's confidence grew stronger, Sonsona got his second wind and tagged Jacobo with solid left and right counters staggering the game Mexican several times before finally sending Jacobo to the canvas in the 8th round with thundering right. Sonsona then coasted to victory after failing to put away for good Jacobo in a 10-round contest.

Sonsona has now improved his record to 15 wins, 1 defeat and 1 draw with 12 KOs. Jacobo suffers his 4th defeat and went down to 16-4-1 win-loss-draw record.

Jed Madela - Breathe Again (Music Video and Lyrics)

Jed Madela - Breathe Again (Music Video and Lyrics)

Have you wondered how it feels
When it's all over
Wondered how it feels
When you just have to start anew
Never knowing, where you're going
When you face a brand new day
It used to be that way
Now I just close my eyes and say

I just wanna breathe again
Learn to face the joy and pain
Discover how to laugh a little
Cry a little, live a little more
I just wanna face the day
Forget about the walls of yesterday
Maybe if I hope a little
Try a little more
I'll breathe again

Starting out again is never easy
Disappointments come and go
But life still moves on
With a bit of luck
It's a brand new start
That might just work my way
I need to walk away
Don't wanna live a life's replay

I just wanna breathe again
Learn to face the joy and pain
Discover how to laugh a little
Cry a little, live a little more
I just wanna face the day
Forget about the walls of yesterday
Maybe if I hope a little
Try a little more
I'll breathe again

Things will work out fine
If you can find the courage
To look past the light
To see the break of dawn

I just wanna breathe again
Learn to face the joy and pain
Discover how to laugh a little
Cry a little, live a little more
I just wanna face the day
Forget about the walls of yesterday
Maybe if I hope a little
Try a little more
I'll breathe again

Protégé Final 10 Will Perform at the SM Mall of Asia Centerstage Today

All roads will lead to one destination today, October 16, as the biggest and widest reality talent search on Philippine TV, Protégé: The Battle for the Big Break, showcases the Final 10 live at the SM Mall of Asia Centerstage.

After the three-month long search, each of the 10 music icons acting as mentors finally has a sole protégé. The mentor-protégé tandems that will battle for the big break are: Mentor Jaya and Protégé Lovely Embuscado from Davao, Mentor Aiza and Protégé Krizza from Cagayan De Oro, Mentor Imelda and Protégé Rosalyn from Bicol, Mentor Joey G and Protégé Samantha from Dagupan, Mentor Rey and Protégé Group So Wat from Pampanga, Mentor Claire and Protégé Jensen from Batangas, Mentor Gloc 9 and Protégé Denise from Mega Manila, Mentor Rachelle Ann and Protégé Nomer from Cebu and Mentor Janno and Protégé Lirah.

10 Music icons were tasked to roam around the country and scour different provinces and cities to find the best music acts that may become their bets for the competition. After the Hunt phase from different regions, each mentor picked three potential protégés who were pitted against each other during the Face Off round. Judges decided who among them deserves to move on to the Live Gala.

The first live show will be a non-elimination showdown with the theme"Protégés Pick." Every Sunday, expect cutting-edge production numbers and international quality entertainment from the protégés as each of them performs on stage to win the votes of the public and the judges.

Judging the competition are acclaimed composer and musical director, Mr. Louie Ocampo, renowned TV Director and Musician, Direk Bert De Leonand Comedian, TV Host and Songwriter, Joey de Leon. Together with the help of the voting public, they will choose who will stay in the competition.

Witness how the protégés made it through the week despite the growing conflicts and struggles they are enduring as they break in to the world of show business. Protégé Kenneth has been holding grudges against his mentor, Jay-R, because he feels like the latter has been very distant and paid a little attention to his responsibilities as mentor. Rey Valera's group, "So Wat" are now struggling hard to gel together and be able to come up with a good show. Jaya's Protégé, the teen girl with a pet pig, Lovely Embuscado, on the other hand is now living her Cinderella dream. Mentor Claire has been pushing her Protégé Jensen so hard, that's how serious she is to win the cutthroat competition. Not even Mentor Imelda can stop her from claiming the grand title.

More inciting events are coming as the week culminates on the biggest musical warfare, Protégé: The Battle for the Big Break tonight after Kap's Amazing Stories.

The Timekeepers and Minutemen of ‘In Time’

It’s a race against time for two young fugitives in a society where time is the currency and there is never enough of it in the philosophical action thriller “In Time.”

Starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried with Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy and Alex Pettyfer, “In Time” clocks in a world where which people stop aging at 25. From that point onward they have to buy, borrow or steal time in order to stay alive. Every second counts. For the poor like Timberlake’s Will Salas, life is a constant struggle for survival, while the wealthy have enough time to live forever.

Falsely accused of murder and on the run, Will (Timberlake) meets the rich and beautiful Sylvia (Seyfried). Together the charismatic pair is trying to bring down the corrupt system. The world created by director Andrew Niccol in “In Time” is corrupt and unjust. For the poor it is a daily battle to acquire enough time to stay alive. The rich on the other hand have centuries and can potentially live forever. There is a yawning gap between the haves and have-nots.

Sylvia and Will are running for their lives – not just to find enough time to make it through another day, but from the Timekeepers out to capture the fugitive duo. “Timekeepers keep the system running; they actually keep time,” says Niccol. “And our principal antagonist, Timekeeper Leon, is not really a villain. He is just a bureaucrat, an authority figure who has allegiance to no one, rich or poor. His only allegiance is to minutes and seconds. He believes (or has to believe) that you are either working for the system, or you need to be eliminated.”

For the role of the Timekeeper Leon the filmmakers cast another “old soul,” Cillian Murphy. Murphy acknowledges the circumstances of his character – “he’s a cop charged with keeping this system going” – but the actor finds the deeper layers of Leon more compelling to play: “What’s great about the character is that he is a contradiction, because he’s actually from that same ghetto where Will lives. Deep down, he knows that it’s a corrupt system, and yet he’s decided to accept that and pursue his goal of keeping time. He’s a very kinetic and focused character, and for him it’s just about constantly moving forward. I think he’s suppressed all of his past. What I liked about the writing is that Will and Leon, they’re the flip side of each other. It’s just different paths having been taken. This is the path he’s chosen, and he suppresses all of the misgivings and issues he has with this system. He’s tried to leave them behind over the course of his life.”

As with the classic archetypal chase – the hunter and the hunted – so beautifully realized in, for example, The Fugitive, a bond forms as the chase quickens. Murphy adds, “Not only does Leon realize he’s from the same side of the tracks as Will, but there is a sense of history; Leon knew Will’s father. I think over the course of the story, they gain a respect for each other.”

Part of the menace of Dayton, apart from the possibility of timing out should one not amass a day’s wages, is the presence of Minute Men, who are thieves out to steal time. Alex Pettyfer portrays Fortis, the leader of the Minute Men – a refined 75-year-old psychopath (who of course looks 25). “Because of the character’s age, he’s quite articulate,” says Niccol. “He has more sophisticated taste in clothing than a younger man would have. That makes him seem different from the younger characters.”

Pettyfer offers, “Fortis is a bruiser, though not without a certain elegance. And he’s just a complete psycho, and crazy-hungry for time. I think the scariest thing about him is that he feels he has nothing to lose. He just doesn’t care. He’s just now gone completely insane and is on a rampage for more time.”

The actor enjoyed his trip to the dark side, finding it a liberating experience: “You can’t do everything you want playing a villain, but you have room to create. And I think that’s the most attractive thing about playing a character like Fortis; it’s that you can build so many layers with him.”

Riveting action thriller “In Time” opens October 28 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Sam Milby – Hindi Kita Iiwan (Music Video and Lyrics)

Umiiyak ka na naman mahal
Lagi na lang ika'y nasasaktan
Sabi niya
Di ka iiwanan
Ikaw ay nabigo
Kayo'y nagkalayo

Ako'y nahihirapan
Pag ika'y nasasaktan

Mario Maurer to Headline Philippine Fashion Week

Local apparel brand Penshoppe recently confirmed that for their Philippine Fashion Week show to be held on October 29, 2011 at SMX, Thai superstar Mario Maurer has agreed to strut the runway as the show’s final reveal.

This latest development was confirmed by Penshoppe Brand Director Alex Mendoza who said, “Our theme for Fashion Week aptly called INVASION represents the thrilling new changes happening to the brand on its 25th year and we are very excited to see a massive Asian star like Mario Maurer close the show for us.”

This October, Mario Maurer is set to arrive in Manila as the latest endorser of Penshoppe. Following the brand’s highly successful series of top trending international campaigns, Maurer’s selection after British actor Ed Westwick of the popular series Gossip Girl marks the arrival of the local apparel group as a force to be reckoned with not only in the local circles but also in the international market.

Ed Westwick for Penshoppe opened a lot of doors for us. Now Mario will not only make Penshoppe a bigger fashion name in the Philippines - he will also help grow the market in Southeast Asia, especially knowing that he has gained a wide following among the regional fans,” explains Mendoza.

While Ed represents the international jet set, Mario will represent a wider audience composed of the younger set.

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ leading broadcast network ABS CBN has been awarded the exclusive rights to air the highly anticipated Philippines visit of the Thai heartthrob. Among the films that boosted Maurer’s name to public consciousness was The Love of Siam released in 2007. He also starred in the sleeper hit Crazy Little Thing Called Love that surprisingly gave ABS CBN high ratings during its premiere on local television.

Sneak Peek: “Sherlock Holmes 2” Character Posters

Warner Bros. debuts the international character posters of its upcoming action-adventure “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” the follow-up to the 2010 smash hit “Sherlock Holmes.”

The one-sheets feature the individual characters of bestfriends Holmes and Watson, played respectively by Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.

The sequel reunites director Guy Ritchie with stars Downey and Law, as well as producers Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin.

In the film, Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room…until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large - Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) - and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

Jared Harris (TV’s “Mad Men,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) joins the cast as the notorious Professor Moriarty. Also joining the cast, in her first English-speaking role, is Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, who gained international attention in the Swedish film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Stephen Fry (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older brother.

Opening across the Philippines in January 2012, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Cannes Winner “Drive” Will be Shown in Manila Soon

Winner of the Best Director award in this year's Cannes Film Festival, FilmDistrict's critically acclaimed thriller “Drive” starring Ryan Gosling will be shown soon exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4 & Greenbelt 3). The film is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and adapted from James Sallis's 2005 novel of the same name.

In the film, Driver (Gosling) is a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for armed heists by night. Though a loner by nature, Driver can't help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a vulnerable young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband Standard (Oscar Isaac).

Producer Adam Siegel felt the driver was a rare character – someone who has a purpose, excels at one thing and makes no apologies for it. Producer Marc Platt agreed, noting that the driver reminded him of heroes and movie characters similar to characters Clint Eastwood used to portray.

"I was very taken with this little crime story that James Sallis wrote,” Platt adds. “I felt that the way the world was presented in the book demanded that its true grit be retained in the script. The grit comes from seeing the world from the point of view of Driver in the car. It’s those elements that I felt were critical to retain to make this film a very unique cinematic experience."

Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Hossein Amini adapted the novel for the screen. He felt it was a rare book to receive from a studio because it was short, gloomy and like a poem. Because the novel does not present a linear story but has many flashbacks and jumps around in time, Amini found the adaptation challenging. He felt the non-linear structure made it "a very tricky structure" for a feature film.

“Drive” premiered on May 20, in competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. At its first showing to the media, it received abundant praise and received "some of the best responses of the festival.” It was greeted with hoots and howls of joy from the media, with viewers cheering some of the scenes featuring extreme violence. “Drive” also received a 15 minute standing ovation from the crowd.

Likely, it served as a welcome relief to the press with previously serious-dramatic projects being shown earlier. Xan Brooks of The Guardian called the film his guilty pleasure of the 2011 competition, labeling it an enjoyable affair. "Over the past 10 days we've witnessed great art and potent social commentary; the birth of the cosmos and the end of the world. Turns out what we really wanted all along was a scene in which a man gets his head stomped in a lift. They welcome it in like a long-lost relation", he wrote. The festival named Refn best director for “Drive.”

Sneak Peek: Straw Dogs

Columbia Pictures presents the frightening suspense thriller “Straw Dogs” starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgård, Dominic Purcell and James Woods.

Directed by and screenplay by Rod Lurie, the film is based on the 1971 movie of the same title written by David Zelag Goodman and Sam Peckinpah who adapted the novel “The Siege of Trencher’s Farm” by Gordon Williams.

When everything you’ve lived for is under siege, what would you do? How far would you go?

It’s a question made terrifyingly apparent to Hollywood screenwriter David Sumner (Marsden) and his actress wife Amy (Bosworth) when they move to her small hometown in the Deep South after her father’s death. Smiling faces, warm welcomes and what were once comfortable old relationships take on a sinister tinge for David and Amy, who find themselves driven to a crisis-laden brink.

The suspenseful, gut-wrenching and intensely cathartic new version brings the original story to the present-day American South, and sets it against a backdrop of small town life where everyone knows too much about each other, the town hierarchy is determined by your place within the ranks of the high school football team and the performance of the football team at Friday night’s game determines the fates of many.

David and Amy’s plan is to prepare for sale the family home, which has fallen into disrepair, and for David to take advantage of the quiet and solitude to complete the screenplay he’s working on.
But all is not as bucolic as it seems in Blackwater, Mississippi, and the arrival of the Sumners stirs up long-dormant resentments and suspicious actions. Once there, Amy slips back into being the hometown celebrity, which leaves David feeling out of touch with his wife and questioning her behavior.

Meanwhile, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, most notably with Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie (Skarsgård), who, along with his fellow former football teammates Bic (Drew Powell), Norman (Rhys Coiro) and Chris (Billy Lush) push the limits of David’s tolerance and the Sumners’ marriage, forcing them to re-evaluate each other and their relationship.

When the daughter of the former football coach Tom Heddon (Woods) goes missing, her father takes the law into his own hands, enlisting Charlie and his boys to help him search for her and setting into motion a series of events that ultimately leads to an explosively violent confrontation, escalating to a shocking, catastrophic climax that will shatter the lives of everyone involved.
