Philippine Azkals vs Hong Kong Game Result: Long Teng Cup 2011

Philippine Azkals vs Hong Kong Game Result: Long Teng Cup 2011

The Philippine Azkals came back from two goals down and if not for a late Hong Kong strike, could have won the game but was held to a 3-3 draw in the second edition of the Long Teng Cup at the Kaohsiung National Stadium in Taiwan.

Consecutive goals by Lee Wai Lim and Cheng Lai Hin in the second and 22nd minutes of the match gave defending champion Hong Kong an early 2-0 lead.

A Phil Younghusband penalty kick got the Philippines on the board in the 32nd minute of the first half.

Thirteen minutes later, Azkals co-captain Chieffy Caligdong’s scored the Philippines’ second goal to tie the count at halftime.

Buoyed by the comeback the Azkals pressed for the winner and it was the Air Force winger from Iloilo that came up with the big shot.

Receiving a diagonal ball in the 63rd minute from James Younghusband Caligdong gained control and fired into the top corner to put the Philippines ahead for the first time in the match.

Hong Kong then was reduced to 10 men as Ng Wai Chiu received his marching orders and despite threatening on the wings throughout the game the Azkals held firm.

The Philippines thought they had achieved a remarkable comeback leading 3-2 into the final five minutes of the game but Hong Kong’s Au Yeung Yiu Chung turned in the equalizer from a free kick in the 87th minute.

The equalizer brought the teams back onto level terms, probably a fair result given Hong Kong’s better use of possession throughout much of the game. Both teams hung on to the draw and in the end it still signals a good result.

In the same fixture last year, Hong Kong’s Under-23 squad scored a 4-2 win over the Azkals. Now the Philippines have held their seniors team to a 3-3 draw. Seemingly fond of six goal thrillers both teams will be looking to Taiwan and Macau to maximize their goal difference as if Hong Kong and the Philippines win their remaining two games only goal difference will decide who wins the competition.

The long search for a trophy continues for the Philippines but they are making progress and showed great heart. Unlucky not to have won this game they have put in a performance full of resolve. The slow start is perhaps attributable to the debuts given to five new players; Roland Müller made many good saves despite conceding three while Matthew Hartmann, Jeff Christiaens, Carlos de Murga and Oliver Poetschke showed potential.

It was veteran winger Chieffy Caligdong who stole the plaudits though. Scoring a brace within the game he was unlucky to have been injured and replaced by Christiaens. After the game coach Michael Weiss hailed the winger for his “fantastic" performance and mused that “We should have been rewarded with the win just for Caligdong’s effort."

Clearly disappointed with some of the referee’s decisions he particularly thought the team could have won the game when Phil Younghusband appeared to be wrongly flagged offside. Through on goal at that time it would have put the Philippines up 4-2, an exact reversal of last year’s score and would have put the game to rest.

With Hong Kong slight favorites to win the competition avoiding defeat means the Philippines have a real chance at winning their first trophy in almost a century. Weiss now has the options to switch things up when needed after being criticized in the past for not trusting his substitutes. His main concern, though, will be the injury which forced Caligdong off the pitch. With a race to the highest goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded) imminent, the Philippines will need all the creativity they can get.

A big disappointment in the game, however, was Jason de Jong’s second yellow card in the last minutes of the game. Obviously disappointed he once more failed to hold his temper, received his marching orders for dissent and will miss the game against Taiwan on October 2. Hong Kong, however, was reduced to nine men when Loi Keung was also sent off. How the teams will react remains uncertain and the Long Teng Cup remains wide open.

Already a smash hit in the US, The Amazing World of Gumball will have Pinoy kids laughing out loud as they follow the funny adventures of Gumball, a kid who faces the trials and tribulations of any 12-year-old; like being chased by a rampaging T-Rex, having a robot steal his identity or dressing as a cheerleader to impress the girl of his dreams. Gumball, who is really a blue cat with a giant head, is part of an extra-ordinary suburban family who just happen to live in an ordinary town. There's Dad, a 6' 4" pink rabbit who stays at home while Mom works in the rainbow factory. And their kids are pretty standard too: besides Gumball, there's his sister Anais, a 4-year-old genius bunny and Darwin, a pet goldfish who became part of the family when he sprouted legs.

Lucien Harrington, Vice President of Branding and Communications, Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific said, "Cartoon Network's promise is simple, it's all about the fun and energy of the playground and we invite kids everywhere to tune in to experience our brand new look and line up of comedy, starting with the laugh-a-second adventures in The Amazing World of Gumball."

The series will air in 166 countries, and due to its early success the show has already been commissioned for a second series. It also scooped the prestigious 'Cristal Award' for Best Television Production at this year's Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June.

Nora Aunor and Anne Curtis' Magazine Covers Holding a Cigarette: Who Does It Best?

Nora Aunor and Anne Curtis' Magazine Covers Holding a Cigarette: Who Does It Best?

Nora Aunor’s YES! magazine cover holding a cigarette became controversial when the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) which supports the “Smoke Free Philippines” campaign and its volunteer running priest advocate Fr. Robert Reyes hit the Superstar and the publication saying the magazine cover conveys negative image of showbiz stars in the country.

"The Filipino reading public is not dumb... If you want to be popular again, be wholesome. Gusto n'yo ba gayahin ka namin? Ang trabaho n'yo is to inspire us, not to scandalize us." Fr. Reyes said

"Nora, you are ill-advised. You think you are moving forward, it's a step backwards." he added.

But while Nora is being attacked for the photograph that "best captures the iconic star as she is today" at least according to Yes! Editor-in-Chief Jo-Ann Maglipon, Anne Curtis, made the same deed by posing half-nude holding a cigarette on the cover of Rogue Magazine - and she got unnoticed considering how famous and influential she is in Philippine showbiz.

Tumakbo din kaya si Fr. Reyes pag nakita nya ang magazine cover ni Anne? Just asking.

Sneak Peek: ‘War Horse’ Poster

DreamWorks Pictures has just revealed the first poster of Steven Spielberg’s new epic adventure “War Horse,” a tale of loyalty, hope and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War.

“War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets - British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter - before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse - an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. “War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war - a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is currently on Broadway. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

“War Horse” opens in Philippine theaters in January 2012. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, “War Horse” stars Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irvine, Benedict Cumberbatch and Toby Kebbell. Lee Hall and Richard Curtis penned the screenplay based on the book by Michael Morpurgo and the recent stage play by Nick Stafford, produced by the National Theatre of Great Britain and directed by Tom Morris and Marianne Elliot.

DreamWorks Pictures has just released the film’s bus shelter artworks highlighting the bots Atom, Ambush, Noisy Boy and Midas.

In the film, Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next.

When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Opening across the Philippines on October 12, in IMAX, 2D and regular theaters, “Real Steel” is a DreamWorks Picture to be distributed locally by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.

Ice Cream Sandwich: eBay Leaks Ice Cream Sandwich Photo and Video

Ice Cream Sandwich: eBay Leaks Ice Cream Sandwich Photo and Video

Android users may have accidentally gotten their first peek at Ice Cream Sandwich.

A person who bought a Samsung Nexus S smartphone via eBay reportedly discovered that the device was running the upcoming version of the Android operating system instead of the current Android flavor, say the folks at Engadget.

Checking the firmware version numbers, Engadget said the phone seemed to be using the same baseband seen in previously leaked screenshots but had a newer build and kernel.

The buyer shot a two-minute video showing off the phone's interface and features. That video then found its way onto Engadget's site, as seen here.

Taking a tour of the video, Engadget and others have noted a lot of similarities to Gingerbread and Honeycomb, though now there are four shortcut buttons along the bottom. A new Google Apps icon provides access to an array of Google services, including Gmail, Calendar, Google+, and YouTube. Pressing the home button brings up a vertical menu where you can jump from one app or feature to another.

Of course, as Engadget admits, this could simply be a video by someone who faked the look and feel of Android's latest incarnation through a custom ROM build. However, in the latest twist, the eBay buyer posted a message early today on the XDA Developers forum after he found that Google was allegedly trying to remotely lock and wipe the phone.

Following the ensuing conversation thread on the forum, tech site Android and Me said several developers chimed in trying to help the person recover his phone and that at least one developer confirmed that the OS was in fact "the real deal."

Google did not immediately respond to a CNET request for comment.

The company has been busy trying to unwrap Ice Cream Sandwich as quickly as possible, partly to compete with the iPhone 5, which will likely be available for sale next month. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt recently revealed that ICS would debut in October or November. The actual unveiling could come on October 11, when Google and Samsung are scheduled to hold an event promising "a look at what's new from Android."

Kindle Fire Tablet Computer Sells for $200

Kindle Fire Tablet Computer Sells for $200

Amazon.com Inc. unveiled its first tablet computer with a host of functions and features that allow it to do nearly everything the iPad can do - but at less than half the cost.

Called the Kindle Fire, the device may quickly become the strongest competitor yet to the iPad, analysts said. Barely 18 months after Apple Inc. released the first iPad, tablet computers are a nearly $30-billion industry, with the iPad accounting for almost 80% of the market.

The Fire, introduced Wednesday by Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos, is aimed at attracting consumers who want a tablet but can't afford the iPad and its other pricier competitors. Amazon set the price at $200 — well below Apple's $500 iPad.

Reebok Refund: $25M on Reebok EasyTone and RunTone Shoes

Reebok Refund: $25M on Reebok EasyTone and RunTone Shoes

Reebok refund to its EasyTone and RunTone shoes customers reaches to $25 million as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over deceptive advertising.

According to the FTC complaint, which was filed in federal court Wednesday, September 28, Reebok falsely asserted specific numerical claims, saying, for example, that walking in EasyTone shoes had been proven to lead to 11 percent greater strength and tone in hamstring muscles than regular walking shoes.

"Marketing campaigns, no matter how clever, sexy or funny, must start and must stick with product claims that are substantiated," David Vladeck, FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection Director said in a news conference.

However, Reebok International Ltd. defended its shoes and EasyTone technology in a statement.

"Settling does not mean we agree with the FTC's allegations; we do not. We have received overwhelmingly enthusiastic feedback from thousands of EasyTone customers, and we remain committed to the further development of our EasyTone line of products."

The Company has also stopped manufacturing boxes and promotional materials with the deceptive claims, Vladeck said. Under the terms of the settlement, the company is barred from making claims about the efficacy of its toning shoes on muscle strength unless backed by scientific evidence. It is also prohibited from misrepresenting tests, studies or research about toning shoes.

Consumers who purchased Reebok's toning shoes and apparel can go to ftc.gov/reebok to apply for refunds. The process will be overseen by a federal judge.

Fried Egg Nebula Photo and Video

Fried Egg Nebula Photo and Video

Fried egg nebula is a massive yellow hypergiant star surrounded by a dusty double shell which was captured on a very large telescope by The European Southern Observatory.

The best image of the cosmic Fried Egg Nebula, the predecessor of the “Running Chicken” was captured by the European telescope which is considered the rarest classes of stars in our universe. It was called “Fried Egg Nebula” by astronomers because the cosmic scene resembles a sunny side up fried egg.

The European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, spotted the monster star, which is called a yellow hypergiant. The star is located about 13,000 light-years away from Earth, but is the closest yellow hypergiant found to date.

The hypergiant star dubbed by ESO scientists as the Fried Egg Nebula is so large it has a width that is about 1,000 times larger than our sun. In fact, if the Fried Egg nebula were placed at the center of our solar system, the Earth would be positioned deep within the star itself. The orbit of the planet Jupiter would be just above the star’s surface.

The extreme activity of yellow hypergiants shows that the star will likely die an explosive death, potentially as one of the next supernova explosions to occur in our galaxy. Supernovas blast often spur the creation of newborn stars, the agency said.

Boy Abunda on Erik Santos: "He didn't leave us. We fired him."

Contrary to reports that Erik Santos was the one who left Boy Abunda's talent agency Backroom Inc., the talent manager and host decided to speak about the truth and bares the true reason why they decided to cease the talent - manager relationship between him and the Prince of Pop.

Read below excerpts taken from Boy Abunda's article titled "Why Backroom fired Erik" on his Direct Line column at Philippine Star:

I wanted a peaceful ending after all Erik was not only my talent, he was a friend. And I don‘t fight with my artists. I don’t quarrel with my friends. It is not my style and it is not in my nature. I have been in the celebrity business long enough to know that everything is fleeting, that fame is ephemeral, that memories are short and fickle, that gratitude should either be mandated by law or integrated into the conditional cash transfer (CCT) program of the DSWD.

But not always, I would constantly remind myself. There are those who love without conditions, there are those who are grateful even if they have given more than they have received. Some of the best people I’ve known are friends in the entertainment industry.

After the meeting with the new Backroom management, Erik sought me out. We talked over the phone. I was disappointed and mildly angry but not seething. I told him that I didn’t want to go into details so that wounds wouldn’t be so bad, healing would be easier. I delivered the message that he said some bad things about me and the office. “Patawarin nyo po ako kung ano man po ang aking nasabi o nagawa,” he meekly pleaded. I accepted his apologies. I thought it was the beginning of the Peace Process in Iraq.

However, immediately after my conversation with him he started to blabber, “Ano ba nagawa ko? Wala naman akong ginawang masama. Wala akong kasalanan. Bakit ako lang ang pinaalis nila?” Ironically, he was venting his feelings and ruminations to a common friend with whom he would share his complaints against me and the Backroom staff. I thought it didn’t make sense but he was perhaps coping with rejection, a pernicious blade to the ego of any royalty, more so to the Prince of Pop. It was beyond his ego that he was fired politely and claiming that there was no apparent reason for his expulsion was protecting his newly acquired designer “ego.”

But it was a chit-chat between friends and I understood. I do it. Others do it. Then the flowers and notes came from the Prince of Pop for his subjects in the office and his former chief servant, who was me. Classy act, I murmured. But then again I was told that he was whining, “Wala man lang nag-text nag-thank you, bakit? Nakapatay ba ako ng tao?” So the Prince of Pop was kvetching again because his subjects were ingrates and were sordidly déclassé for not responding properly to their master.

And then there was a press conference for Erik’s album. Trouble started to brew again in paradiso. According to one article, “Boy Abunda is sulking because of Erik’s departure from Backroom.” One said, “Boy is hurting because Erik left Backroom.”

It was time to go to (a just) war in red stilettos. It was time to tell the true story, and it’s a short, simple story. Erik Santos was badmouthing me and Backroom. “Mag-isa lang akong nag-iisip. Wala naman nagpaplano para sa akin.” So everyone was a useless nincompoop watching him steer his career towards the Pacific Ocean. Backroom as a talent management office may not be the best. It has many failings and shortcomings. There was an incident on the Sunday show ASAP where he was being taken out of his production number. Of course, he raised hell. It was no way to treat anyone, more so the Prince of Pop.

Unfortunately, there was no Backroom staff with him. “Mag-isa lang ako. Para akong tanga,” he ranted. This was a valid complaint I told Rowena Salido. “Kung hindi ko pa tinawagan si Tito Boy, he wouldn’t have called Joyce Liquicia (business unit head for ASAP).” This one was a lie. I called Joyce after the incident was reported to me by Rowena, then I called Erik to let him know that I already spoke to Joyce.

And then there were things he didn’t like in the office. For out-of-town gigs, he didn’t like Andy because he snores, Bettina overpowers, Liza doesn’t mind him. He only likes Leo because he unpacks his luggage like a dutiful geisha. Having confirmed that he had been talking behind my back and against the office, we decided to politely release him.

I took a break from Backroom because I want to take care of my Nanay. Backroom is now being run by the very people who helped me build it through the years — before and after Erik is long gone. That office is small and simple. It operates on no-frills policies. It takes care of its employees. It’s far from being a wealthy talent management house, but it is sturdy because it’s built on a solid foundation of love, humility and integrity.

I used to tell Erik that, “what sets you apart is that you’re a good person.”

Even in pain, I still believe he is a good guy who works hard for his family. He is devoted to his mother.

This is perhaps just a phase when we need to be shaken to be reminded that we all go back to dust in the end.

After I’ve said what needs to be said, I forgive Erik. I also know in my heart that one day he will realize his little mistakes and learn from them. I also wish that he finds it in his heart to forgive our little sins borne and burnt out of too much zeal and love for the people we work for.

It’s a thankless job I know but sometimes it is worth it despite the noise and posturings when someone whispers “thank you.”

I may have been hurt but I’m not broken. I pray to God that Erik, the Backroom management and staff, and I will come out better people after “bleak razzmatazz.”

Below letter by Bon Abunda was handed to Erik Santos personally by Rowena Salido, Backroom’s new President, after he was told that Backroom was releasing him as an artist.

Dear Erik,

Thank you for being part of Backroom for six years and seven months. Now that Backroom is moving towards a new direction and we are letting you go with best wishes, all of us will treasure the good things and learning we have gone through together.

I’m taking a break from my management chores because Nanay needs me — being the most important reason among many others.

But as I say thank you, I hope you find it in your heart as well to be grateful not to me but to the people (in the office) who were with you from the beginning. These are the people who gambled with you in the process, people who believed in the infinite possibilities, people who had so much faith in your talent.

It’s a small thing that I’m asking you. Please say thank you to them. They are not perfect. But they truly have done so much for you, for me and for all of us. Let’s not forget easily.

You are who you are because of your hardwork and talent, God’s guidance, the hardwork of many people, the support of the public, the press, and many others.

Your story (as the Prince of Pop) does not start today.

It started six years, seven months ago, long before your houses and BMW, long before your famous and beautiful friends, long before the designer clothes and shoes.

For you to get to where you want, it is important that you don’t forget. Remain humble and simple. We are all on borrowed time and everything is fleeting.

Be grateful. Thank you.

I will see you soon.

Sincerely,

Boy Abunda

NFL Power Rankings 2011 - Week 4

2NFL Power Rankings Week 4: Rams NFL's Worst Team?

The Seattle Seahawks ranked last in ESPN's most recent NFL power rankings.

Should another team from the NFC West replace them at No. 32? Five things to consider regarding the St. Louis Rams:

* The Rams, like the Kansas City Chiefs, have yet to run an offensive play this season while leading their opponent. Seattle and Miami had not before Sunday.

* Each of the Rams' three opponents this season has returned a Sam Bradford fumble for a touchdown. The Rams' offense has only three touchdowns. Discouraging math there.

* Steven Jackson still isn't ready to contribute fully. He was active Sunday, but played sparingly and made no difference.

* The Rams have not yet scored in a fourth quarter this season.

* For all their problems on offense, the Rams have allowed more rushing yards than any team in the league. They rank 31st in yards allowed per carry. They are 31st in point differential per game, ahead of only the Chiefs. But the Chiefs were competitive in defeat Sunday, losing 20-17 at San Diego.

Where would you rank the Rams? Which teams are worse?
